The Workplace Pride Business Conference will explore how work and the work floor is a vital component to LGBT inclusion around the world, and how businesses and companies can be turned into allies of LGBT advocates. The focus will be on the South-East Asian region (ASEAN Countries) and Hong Kong. It will bring together employers and employees, government organizations, NGO’s and activists, representing businesses, public sector and civil society to address the challenges of being LGBT in the various workplaces in the region.
Creating a more inclusive and LGBT-friendly workplace is a valuable goal in itself as work plays a very important part in everyone’s life. It starts with a safe and welcoming working environment for LGBT’s within the company but it doesn’t end there: An inclusive and LGBT-friendly workplace will have its “spill-over effect” effect on the society around, through business relations, employees and company policies. It is therefore a valuable goal for the general LGBT movement.
The vast differences in LGBTI acceptation and inclusion between the various countries in the region of SE Asia are posing a specific challenge and a benefit. Strategies, tools and tactics may vary strongly across countries, and a one-size-fits-all approach will not exist. Yet business culture is probably much more similar and participants from different countries will be able to exchange views, and learn from each other what will and what will not work. Workplace Pride Foundation will bring its 10 years of experience in Europe of blending LGBTI activism and business culture to the table, on the basis of a business case that is attractive for a growing number of multinationals.
A specific goal of this conference and workshop is to lay the foundation and explore the opportunities for a more permanent approach in the form of an LGBTI business network in South East Asia, similar to Workplace Pride Foundation in Europe and based on permanent co-operation between activists, employees, businesses and government.
The Workplacce Pride Business Conference is an event within the framework of the ILGA World Conference, organized by ILGA Association from Geneva, and hosted by its local partners Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand, and Purple Sky Network
